Middle School Winter Guard FAQs
What is it?
Winter guard is a competitive activity in which students learn how to perform a show where you dance, spin/toss a flag, rifle and sabre. Castle North Middle School and Castle South Middle School are combined to join one Castle Cadet Team.
When is the season?
Competitions start in January through the beginning of March. Practices begin in December.
Do I need previous experience?
No! We’re going to teach you the skills you need. All you need is a willingness to learn, a positive attitude, and energy. If you do have a background in dance, gymnastics, tumbling, etc. please let us know so that we may plan accordingly.
Does it cost to participate?
Yes, there is a participation fee that helps cover the cost of equipment, uniforms, contest entries, transportation, etc. There are opportunities to fundraise to offset the cost of fees. See below for exact costs.
Why should I do it?
This is a program that develops skills in movement and expression. It fosters teamwork, leadership, self-discipline, self-esteem and work ethic in a competitive environment much like athletic sports. In addition, our staff and coaches have been recognized at the international level for excellence in this activity. Finally, this program develops skills utilized by the color guard in the fall that competes as a part of the National Class 3A Champion Castle Marching Knights. So, not only will students learn from the best, but be a part of a program that is, quantifiably, one of the best in the country.
All rehearsals and shows are mandatory. If your child will be missing a rehearsal or a performance, please email Guard Director, Daniel Riley and Band Secretary, Mrs. Glass.
Please try and schedule any appointments on days we are not rehearsing.

The shows are hosted in High Schools in Indiana. The furthest we will travel is the Indianapolis area.
